Interior Design Concept for Deep Retrofit Commercial Office

How do you turn a damp, disjointed industrial building into a future-ready workspace? Our latest project answers that question with a  sustainable interior design concept that breathes new life into a former colliery mess hall.

This deep retrofit transforms a neglected structure into a high-performance commercial office by combining modern workplace standards with strong roots in the building’s industrial past.

Over the years, the building had suffered from poor-quality materials, ad-hoc alterations, and inefficient layouts. Its original character was almost lost.

Instead of starting over, we focused on adaptive reuse, respecting what remained and reimagining its potential.
The goal: to blend sustainability, heritage, and usability into a single, cohesive space.

We chose materials and finishes that not only look good but also support comfort, durability, and environmental performance. The design meets EnerPHit retrofit standards, setting a high benchmark for low-energy use.

Key Design Elements:

  • Wood wool acoustic ceiling panels – Adds texture, reduces noise, and improves thermal performance.
  • Lime plastered walls – Natural and breathable. It helps regulate humidity and reflect soft daylight.
  • Terrazzo-effect porcelain flooring – Durable, low-maintenance, and visually seamless across the space.
  • Oversized recessed porcelain skirting boards – Provide bold visual detailing and make cleaning easy in a busy office.

The interior is inspired by the building’s original use: a functional, no-frills mess hall, but reinterpreted through a minimalist, modern lens.

The material palette is tactile, earthy, and robust.  This is a working space designed to be both resilient and refined.

This project proves that thoughtful interior design can do more than create beautiful spaces, it can preserve history, improve performance, and shape how buildings serve us into the future.
