The Ruin

Northumberland

We have been asked to restore and extend this beautiful stone ruin, which sits alone on a valley head within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

The design narrative of the development will be driven by the areas rich agricultural heritage. Other nearby stone farm buildings such as this are typically accompanied by make shift timber shelters and corrugated metal barrel top barns. The new extensions, when read against the host building, will look to replicate the language of these little clusters of isolated rural settlement.

It is the owners goal to live as sustainably as possible. We will aim to help them achieve this by designing an extremely energy efficient building powered by renewable generation.

The owners will also ‘live off the land’ including the keeping of livestock, vegetable allotments, harvest crops, and fruit orchards across the huge south facing site.
